My Experience with Academic Job Search / Salary Data

MY EXPERIENCE WITH ACADEMIC JOB SEARCH (WITH AN MS DEGREE) There are usually two avenues after MS (or even PhD). You can choose to go to industry or academia. I will focus on teaching as this is the route I took. As a candidate for instructor or teacher with MS/PhD degree you have primarily two options: Community Colleges or Universities. Here are few things to remember: Top Research universities will always want a candidate with finished PhD. Some occasionally will ask for ABDs but degree needs to be finished before you start working. These positions are mostly Tenure Track positions but sometimes Non-Tenure Track too. Other universities or colleges will prefer PhDs but may accept MS degrees for teaching positions (like lecturer or instructor). This also works for regional campuses of large universities too. Community colleges mostly want candidates with MS degrees and with some other certifications. The best time to start looking for academic jobs is from November-Decembe...

Basics of Retirement Options

Here is some Basic information that I have been able to understand: To get/save money, there are 4 classes .... based on taxation Free: Inheritance Tax-Free: HSA, Roth IRA, Life Insurance, 529, Money Bonds. Tax-Deferred: IRA, 401k, 403b, 457b, Annuity Taxable: Income Of course free is the best (inheritance). Tax-Free is better but Tax-deferred, which is the last best option! Income is always taxable . Income is a combination of wages, salaries, capital gains and business profit/loss on which Fed/State tax is calculated. To reduce income, you can contribute more to your retirement accounts on pre-tax basis. AGI (adjusted gross income) is income with some adjustments like HSA, educator expenses, student loan interest deductions, etc. MAGI is AGI with some deductions added back. Most universities offer a combination of plans which may be Pension plans (like STRS), Contribution plans (401k, 403b) or others. Companies offer contribution plans like 401ks. You should also explore ...

My Experience with Academic Job Search (Search Committee's Perspective)

Let's look at the Academic Search from Search Committee's Perspective : Before you start, you already know that the ad has gone out and candidates have applied. The search committee has pretty good idea what kind of role is expected from the chosen candidate: When search committee is formed, they will first come up with the timeline for the search. They will then decide the criteria for evaluations (what to evaluate and how to score) .... This could include:  degree/qualification (what, where, when),  teaching experience (courses taught/TA-ed),  research (quality, quantity),  area (of research/teaching),  and may also include professional development, recommendations, quality of teaching/research statement, potential growth, and much more depending on specific position and the expected role.  Each committee member will then evaluate all applicants based on the criterion and then they will meet to pick the top 10-12 candidates after discussion (...

Diet and Exercise

Before Your Exercise The major source of fuel for active muscles is Glycogen. Best source of glucose is carbohydrates which can be found is starch ( cereal, pasta, bread, grains ), rice, vegetables, fruits (apples, watermelon, peaches, grapes, or oranges), bread/bagel, energy bars and drinks with sugar (or water). Eat 1-2 hours before exercise (or prefer liquid form if closer to exercise time). Avoid lot of fat or fiber just before exercise (meat, fries, candy bars, etc.). During Exercise To continue to perform well, you will need to make sure that your glycogen sources are replenished during your workout. Dry Fruits, juices, energy drinks and bars are good choices. After Workout A light meal (with protein, fat and carbohydrates) within 2 hours of workout is best. Meat/Chicken, Fish, Egg, Yogurt, Chocolate Milk, and Fruit juice are few of the great options. 4:1 ratio of carbs and proteins is recommended for muscle recovery. Miscellaneous The fuel of muscles is glycogen which comes ...

Nintendo DS

Several versions of Nintendo DS gaming console have been sold over the years, Original DS (NDS), DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL and now NDS 3DS. You can buy the games for current versions of these consoles separately, which is usually very expensive (unless you buy used games in lots). Alternately, you can download games from the web (paid or free) but you will need to buy a flashcard separately. Most popular flashcards include r4i Gold, r4-SDHC, etc and can be used very easily. Note: If you want to use these flashcards, don't forget that nintendo releases new updates from time to time to block these flashcards.

Best Badminton Rackets and Reviews

Generally a good player would want stiff shaft. Singles player prefer head heavy (for more smashing) while doubles players go with head light or even balanced rackets. Head-heavy racket is good for smashing but also slow maneuverability because of the weight.
